Countless numbers of students receiving knowledgeable and caring guidance, colleagues benefitting from a collaborative and considerate spirit, and the vision of our institution being upheld with professionalism and pride – such is the profound legacy of Theresa Williams’ more that 25-year tenure at Nassau Community College.
Deeply committed to serving NCC’s student body, Theresa’s impressive history at the College spans several areas of service throughout several areas of the institution. As an Advisor for the Caribbean Student Organization, her mentorship has guided many students in finding their own voice, and several into stepping up to leadership roles within the organization. A strong supporter of NCC’s athletes, Theresa is a regular spectator at basketball and football games. In addition, she has made a point of attending many NCC arts events to demonstrate her appreciation of our students’ talents, and has been a ready and familiar chaperone for various NCC on and off campus student activities. As a major advocate for creating a positive campus environment, Theresa has served on the Black History, Employee Give, and Scholarship Committees as well as others, and is a member of the Civic Association. Her selfless volunteerism has focused on spreading cultural awareness, facilitating networking among NCC’s student clubs, and community outreach. Furthermore, she has participated in scholarship fundraising events by lending her efforts to the NCC Foundation’s Men Who Cook, Golf Outings, and NCC Gala events.
Nassau Community College’s Prom Boutique has been a favored project for Theresa who was tireless in acquiring donations of formal dresses and accessories to be made available to high school students. During NCC’s Day of Service initiatives, she has assisted in organizing youth shopping sprees for the holidays, and has also collected donations of clothing for the earthquake victims of Haiti. Likewise, Theresa has been a major participant in the College’s food collection campaigns to feed the homeless, and has maintained active membership in NCC ALANA, the NAACP and other civic organizations.
This outstanding individual’s efforts to promote higher education for underrepresented youth are immeasurable. She has been a key liaison with several high schools throughout Nassau County and Queens, providing invaluable guidance, information and encouragement to clear pathways for these young people’s pursuit of a college degree. Also a liaison for Nassau BOCES, Senior Reach Centers and Stand Down for Veterans, Theresa’s impact on the betterment of conditions for so many is far reaching. Theresa is a proud graduate of Nassau Community College, SUNY Empire State College and Metropolitan College of New York. As a recipient of the State University of New York Chancellor’s Award for Excellence in Professional Service, a well-earned and well-deserved honor, Theresa’s extensive professional and personal contributions have been a clear manifestation of a purposeful life dedicated to building up others. In recognition of such, and in keeping with Theresa’s earnest mission, the Theresa Williams Scholarship Fund will honor the myriad achievements of this extraordinary individual. By supporting academic and personal achievement for all young people, this scholarship will serve as a reminder of Theresa’s lasting, and meaningful, and appreciated impact.
