Bonita J. Buriel

Professor Bonnie Buriel was born in Port Washington, Long Island. She was exposed to Italian at an early age, later to Spanish in high school and college, and during her studies in Madrid.

Professor Buriel received her BA from Adelphi University, a diploma from the New York University in Spain Program and an MA from NYU in Madrid, Spain. She was a professor of Spanish and Italian at Ohio Wesleyan and Nassau Community College.

During Professor Buriel’s career at Nassau Community, her students always came first and foremost in all her endeavors.

After Professor Buriel’s passing, this Scholarship was established by her husband and friends to honor her memory and continue the love and support she had for her students; who were the hallmark of Professor Buriel’s career.

The Bonita J. Buriel Memorial Scholarship is awarded twice a year, during the fall and spring sessions, to a student who shows proficiency in either language and qualifies for financial support.
